Polyacrylamide (PAM) can be divided into the following categories according to ionic properties: non-ionic, anionic, cationic and amphoteric polyacrylamide. These polymers may be homopolymers or copolymers. The molecular chain of polyacrylamide is very long, so polyacrylamide has a wide range of applications in many fields. The top four use areas of polyacrylamide in China are oil extraction industry, water treatment, mineral processing and coal washing, paper making.

  • Part1. The use of polyacrylamide in the paper industry:

1. Polyacrylamide varieties have been serialized, according to different uses to choose different models, dosage according to different uses, before industrial use can be carried out beaker test to select the appropriate model and determine the amount.

2. When used, the form of dilute solution is formulated (anionic, non-ionic, zwitterionic varieties of polyacrylamide are generally 0.05%-0.3% concentration, and the cation is 0.1%-02% concentration is appropriate) and the lower the concentration, the better the molecular chain extension, the better the use effect.

3. The use of neutral water without salts and inclusions is appropriate, the water temperature of 20-40℃ is appropriate, appropriate heating can accelerate the dissolution of the product, but should not exceed 50℃.

4. In the condition of preparation without automatic dosing equipment, add water to the dissolution tank with stirring, turn on the stirring, and slowly add the dry powder of the weighed flocculant to the stirred water, to avoid the dry powder clumping, so that it is well dispersed, swollen and dissolved in the water, and the flocculant is fully matured, so that satisfactory results can be obtained.

5. After adding PAM, it should generally continue to stir for 30 minutes to ensure that it is fully dissolved.

6. Strong mixing will make polyacrylamide mechanical degradation, affecting the use of the effect, so the mixing speed of 100-300rpm is appropriate.

7. The dissolution operation should be carried out in the anti-corrosion mixing tank such as plastic, ceramic and stainless steel to avoid rust.

8. The dissolved polyacrylamide solution should be transported by low shear pumps such as screw pumps and diaphragm pumps.

9. The dissolved polyacrylamide should be used as soon as possible, the anionic type is generally not more than 36h, and the cationic type is easily hydrolyzed after dissolution should be used within 24h.

  • Part2. Polyacrylamide storage method:

1.Polyacrylamide storage should be kept sealed, dry, away from light, to prevent high temperature, to avoid moisture absorption, degradation and deterioration.

2. Polyacrylamide should not be stored in direct contact with metal containers and should be lined with plastic.

3. Polyacrylamide storage period should not be too long, otherwise it will lead to aging degradation, the thinner the general concentration, the shorter validity period.

  • Part3. Precautions:

Polyacrylamide itself is not toxic, only when inhaled greater than 5 parts per thousand, because the absorption of nutrients in the gastrointestinal mucosa is blocked and harmful. The residual acrylamide monomer in polyacrylamide is toxic and should be strictly controlled when used in food.
