Why Middle East Shipping Disruption Is Reaching China–Southeast Asia Freight

China is a major source of papermaking machinery, replacement components and engineering supplies for mills across Southeast Asia. Although most container services between China and Vietnam, Thailand or Malaysia do not travel through the Red Sea or Strait of Hormuz, disruptions farther away can still influence regional freight rates, shipping schedules and available equipment.

In September 2026, Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index reached US$1,491 per 40-foot container (24 September), before easing to US$1,453 on 15 October. These are regional composite spot-rate figures—not quotations for a particular port pair—and illustrate both the recent pressure and the speed of subsequent adjustment.

Container shipping operates as an interconnected network. Longer voyages or changes to major shipping routes can tie up vessels and containers for additional time. Carriers may alter vessel deployment and feeder connections, while late arrivals at transshipment hubs can disrupt onward sailings. Empty containers may also be temporarily scarce at particular ports or in specific sizes.

Rising bunker costs, weather-related port delays and concentrated booking demand can intensify these effects. However, none of them alone proves that carriers have systematically withdrawn ships from Southeast Asian routes; actual conditions vary by port, carrier and sailing date.

The consequences depend on what is being shipped. A delayed pressure screen basket, pump component or mechanical seal may disrupt a planned shutdown or prolong an unexpected production interruption. Such parts can often be consolidated in standard containers, but the delivery window still needs to match the maintenance plan.

Paper machine rolls, pulpers and large screening equipment involve a different set of considerations. Their packed dimensions, weight, lifting arrangements and securing method can determine whether a standard container, open-top, flat rack or breakbulk shipment is appropriate. Published container-rate indices do not represent the total transport cost of these specialized cargos.

For a new paper machine or a major rebuild, equipment should arrive in an order that supports civil works, installation and commissioning. Early delivery may create storage and handling costs; late arrival of a critical item can delay multiple contractors. Confirming equipment readiness, transport dimensions, port choice, customs documentation and unloading arrangements before shipment helps reduce avoidable disruption.

Buyers should compare the full delivered cost—including ocean freight, origin and destination handling, inland transport and any applicable surcharges—rather than base rates alone. Quotations should also be checked for validity and sailing availability. Freight may ease as congestion clears, so planning should allow for volatility rather than assume a continuous rise.

PMTEC supplies pulping and papermaking equipment, spare parts and engineering services to overseas paper mills. In coordinating equipment manufacture and delivery, our focus is to match packing and shipment arrangements with the customer’s installation priorities and operating schedule. This is particularly important when a small but critical component can affect an entire production line.
